Water lines often contain biofilm. In poultry drinking systems, the presence of water, low flow rates, warm temperatures, bacterial presence, and poor water quality contribute to biofilm formation. Once microorganisms find a suitable surface to attach to, rapid growth can occur. Biofilm can cause diseases in animals and reduce the effectiveness of supplements delivered through water lines.
The slime produced by biofilm bacteria protects them from many disinfectants. For example, chlorine cannot penetrate biofilm well and may react with organic matter to create harmful Disinfecting By-products (DIPs).
Chlorine Dioxide works through oxidation and can effectively remove and destroy biofilm. It reacts with compounds within the cells and on the surface of cell membranes, disrupting cell metabolism and eliminating the biofilm.
• Taste and odour are important as they can affect intake
• Water lines can hold 95% of the biological load
• Water can deliver disease
• Improved water quality increases water and feed intake, and often feed conversion
• Improved water quality reduces mortality and health issues
• Broad Spectrum: ClO2 controls bacteria, fungi, viruses, biofil and algae.
• Not pH sensitive: ClO2 is effective over a broad pH range (4-10). Chlorine and Bromine become ineffective as the pH level rises.
• No disinfection by-products: No harmful or carcinogenic by products (Tri-halo-methanes)
• High Selectivity: ClO2 is more chemically selective than bleaches and peroxides. This means that it destorys unwanted microbes without corroding surfaces.
• Potency: ClO2 is extremely effective at low dosages. Higher dosages of chlorine etc are needed for the same application.
• Rapid Effects: ClO2 has a fast biocidal function. It kills 99.99% of all bacteria in seconds/minutes.
• Biofilm Removal: ClO2 is highly effective at penetrating and removing biofilm from water lines. Chlorine is unable to do this.
• No Resistance: Micro organisms are proven to not be able to build up resistance or tolerance to Chlorine Dioxide over time.
• Safe for Consumption: ClO2 is approved for safe use in water disinfection, and has no harmful effects on the animals and food chain.
• Cleaner water, less bacterial contamination
• Improved odour & taste of water
• More water intake
• Better feed conversion rate (FCR)
• Less disease and intestinal infections
• Reduced mortality
• Fewer medications required to raise flocks
• Lower condemnation rate
• Healthier, heavier birds
• Better bird performance overall
